To Run or Not to Run?

Sunday January 17, 2016.

Tomorrow in Indianapolis, the official training program starts at the YMCA, @ The YMCA at CityWay, for the Indy Mini marathon #IndyMini, #500Festival.

If you are like me, it has crossed your mind in the past few months that in 2016 you will finally run the dreaded 13.1 miles!

You've gotten through the holidays and now for whatever else that has come up in your life, like me, you have decided NOT to run it!

Let me just say this first. It's certainly not too late to change your mind and start training!

For those who are solid on your decision, again like me, have you thought about what you will do instead?

That's what this blog is all about. You will succeed and start to see results if you stay focused on what you CAN do, versus what you CAN'T do, or maybe more accurately, what you don't really want to do (i.e. run 13.1 miles).

I'm not a huge fan of long distance running for many reasons, however, because I am a short distance runner and a physical therapist who treats many runners of all levels, I thought running the mini would make me a better runner and more importantly, a better therapist.

Long story short, I finally got back into my running routing late September 2015 after a fairly intense bicycle accident earlier in march. I kept running after I found out I was pregnant in early November, started a new job at Thanksgiving, then it got colder and colder outside. I know, borderline lame but I'm sticking with the whole pregnancy thing as my number one excuse. Considering May 7 (the day of the Indy Mini) I'll be 32 weeks pregnant, I'm sitting out this year.

I will continue to run though, for up to 6 miles, as long as I am comfortable. I will be following the official YMCA training schedule to keep myself on track.

But life isn’t all about running, or whatever activity it is you always engage in (cycling, swimming, yoga, etc). It’s about you, your life, the food you eat, how much you sit, your stress levels, what you put on your skin, and so much more.

To run or not to run?  That’s not even really the question. My philosophy is that something is better than nothing.

Ask yourself this. Will you do something or nothing?

What is your journey this year going to look like?  You might not know just yet. Keep an open mind and soak in what feels right.

You will see photos and read about a variety of topics here on my blog. Have a specific topic that interests you more than another?  Follow one of my boards on Pinterest to stay focused on what you want, when you want.
